Abstract "Identity" has continually been a hot topic in social science, so is what academic achievements have been made about "identity" in the tourism research field. By collecting main tourism research literatures on "identity" at home and abroad, this article analyses and summarizes research perspectives, contents, and methods, and hence reflects the advancement and trend in this research area in order to highlight the approach to identity research in the academic field of tourism studies. Examining the literature shows that the research interest in identity in tourism studies keeps pace with other disciplines; the identity research in tourism studies has formed its research paradigm and the theoretical frameworks (with culture identity as the core and the psycho-social identity theory as the basis), within which five perspectives have been extended to, such as politics identity, minority identity, place identity, self identity, and social identity:1) the construction of national identity and its interaction with tourism industry constitute the main research content of politics identity; 2) the consolidation, construction and reconstruction of identity have been the research focus of place identity and minority identity; 3) the research on self identity places stress on dynamic change from experience perspective; 4) social identity research is focused on explaining the attitude of tourism stakeholds for tourism development in view of social identity theory. Besides, by contrast to foreign research, it is revealed that domestic research on identity in tourism literatures fall behind the level of foreign research, especially in terms that foreign tourism research pays more attention to the research on national identity, identity dynamics, the representation, construction and reconstruction of identity. At last, this article explores academic status of identity research and main research aspects in tourism field.
